PTE学术英语考试是于2009年10月26日推出的新一代的国际性英语水平测试(The new generation of International English proficiency test was launched on October 26, 2009)，由金融时报的母公司英国培生集团以及GMAT的开发机构管理专业研究生入学考试委员(GMAC)共同研究主办。
PTE学术英语考试英文名称Pearson Test of English Academic(PTE Academic),也被译为培生英语考试，是由培生教育集团(Pearson)开发并得到GMAC(Graduate Management Admission Council)认可的一款新的基于电脑的国际学术英语考试(A new computer-based international academic English test)，它为那些需要学术英语的机构例如大学，高等学府以及政府部门提供了一个真实的衡量考生能力的工具(It provides a real tool to measure the examinee‘s ability)，为需要通过英语考试获得赴英语国家学习机会的非英语国家的学生提供了一种新的选择。
PTE学术英语考试融合了听说读写四种考试形式，考试时间为独立的三小时，所有听说读写四项技能的考核均在三小时内完成(PTE academic English test integrates four test forms of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The test time is independent three hours. All the examinations of four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are completed within three hours)。考试分为三部分，口语与写作部分、阅读部分和听力部分。通过电脑自动评分，避免人为因素带来的不公正性。总分90分，分为6个分数等级，考试成绩5个工作日内网上可查。成绩两年内有效。
所有程序包括报名、付费、修改考试时间、修改考试地点、查阅成绩以及后续的向申请大学寄送考试成绩单的服务安排均在网上完成。

PTE考试特点
相较其他的英语考试，PTE学术英语考试特点非常突出。
首先，PTE学术英语考试采用的是机考模式(PTE academic English test adopts computer-based test mode)，全年开放、考生只需提前48小时注册报名，即可报考，而考试后平均5个工作日内，考生即可收到自己的考试成绩。
其次，参加PTE学术英语考试的考生在获得成绩后(参加PTE学术英语考试的考生在获得成绩后)，可不限次数地向自己希望申请的学校免费发放成绩。

第三，考试时间为3小时，包括听、说、读、写四个部分，均采用电脑评分，客观公正。考生在正式考试前，会被要求录制30秒钟个人陈述，个人陈述部分不被计入正式成绩(Before the formal examination, candidates will be required to record personal statements for 30 seconds, and the personal statements will not be included in the formal score)，但会与成绩单同时发送到海外申请院校，可以更直观地令海外院校了解申请人的语言状况。成绩有效期为2年。
与托福、雅思一样，PTE学术英语考试使用欧盟语言共同参考架构(CEFR)评分标准，考生可以登录PTE学术英语考试官方网站了解三类考试的分值对应标准(Candidates can log in to the official website of PTE academic English test to understand the score corresponding standards of the three types of tests)。
目前PTE学术英语考试在北京、上海、广州、哈尔滨、大连、济南、南京、长沙、武汉、西安、成都、厦门12个城市和香港、台湾设有考点，中国大陆的考试费用为250美元，只能以美元支付，不接受现金人民币。
考生可选择以信用卡支付方式报名(Candidates can choose to register by credit card payment)，也可由PTE学术英语考试的官方合作伙伴代理报名，更为便捷。
